PARKS AND RECREATION RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

 

Tuscumbia Multi-Purpose Center

The Multi-Purpose Center is a community center, which contains a gymnasium with four basketball goals, a spectator area with activities are provided in the center for all age groups. Use of the center is shared with the Tuscumbia Senior Citizens. Ample off street parking is provided.

 

Spring Creek Golf Course

Spring Creek Golf Course is located at 800 Woodmont Drive and is adjacent to Spring Park. The Golf Course is a 9-hole course with a full line Pro Shop. An average of 24,000 rounds of golf is played each year.

 

Spring Park

Spring Park serves as Tuscumbia's most popular park. It is located in downtown Tuscumbia, just south of the central business district. Spring Park consists of a large spring forming a lake which supplies the city's drinking water; a two story open air shelter; several single story shelters; public restrooms; large playground area: open space areas; off-street parking; barbeque grills, lights, and power outlets.

 

Cold Water Falls

Located inside Spring Park is the world's largest man-made natural stone waterfall to be known in existence. The waterfall was in construction for 120 days and the largest stone weighs 77,000 pounds. Approximately 4,320,000 gallons of water pass over the falls each day.

 

Memorial Water Feature

Dedicated to the memory of Princess Im-Mi-Ah-Key the wife of Chief Tuscumbia. Located inside the creek, which runs through the park, there are 51 jets that make up the fountain. The center jet shoots water in excess of 100 feet into the air and the other 50-shoot water 40-50 feet into the air. All jets are choreographed to lights and music.

 

Gilbert Field

Gilbert Field is an open space area with 2 soccer goals. This area is a public open area used for practice fields, picnic area, walking, etc. Gilbert Field is located on East North Commons between the Multi-Purpose Center and the East End Tennis Courts.

 

East End Tennis Courts

The East End Tennis Courts are located on East North Commons at the end of Gilbert Field. There are six asphalt courts on this site. The Courts are enclosed in a chain link fence with lights for night play. Ample parking is provided.

 

Willie Green Community Center

The Willie Green Center is located in Willie Green Park. The center contains a gymnasium with two basketball goals, a spectator stand, a social room with a stage, and kitchen. The Tuscumbia Parks and Recreation Department provides structured recreational activities in this community center.

 

Willie Green Park

This Park is located on South East Street. Willie Green Park is a recreational area consisting of playground equipment, four outdoor-lighted basketball courts, a larger grassy area, and baseball backstop. There is also a picnic area with grills on this site.

 

Helen Keller Commons

This area is a large grassy area, which is a public use area. Located directly in front of the Helen Keller Home this area includes two lighted tennis courts.

 

Tennessee Valley Art Center

The Tennessee Valley Art Association is a multidisciplinary non-profit regional organization providing cultural arts programs for the people of northwest Alabama. Visual arts activities are conducted at the Tennessee Valley Art Center museum adjacent to the Helen Keller Birthplace on the Commons in Tuscumbia. Programming includes rotating exhibitions, juried art competitions, the annual Helen Keller Festival Fine Art and Craft Show, and workshops and classes for adults and children. An educational outreach program is conducted at the organizations facilities and in area schools. A feature of the museum is the permanent exhibit of a pre-historic petroglyph. Native American people of northwest Alabama 800 to 1,000 years ago carved images on the boulder. The petroglyph is displayed in a replicated bluff shelter setting.

 

Helen Keller Public Library

The Helen Keller Public Library is a 10,400 square foot facility, which contains 22,600 volumes with an average circulation of 48,000 per year. The library also contains two meeting rooms with a kitchen.

 

Tuscumbia Depot

This historical facility currently houses a railroad museum with working models of railway systems. On the grounds of the Tuscumbia Depot there is displayed a caboose which attracts several groups of school children each year.

 

Valdosta Community Center

The Valdosta Community Center is located adjacent to R.E. Thompson Middle School. This facility contains a gymnasium with four basketball goals, a meeting room and office area. The school shares this facility for PE classes and a classroom. Organized recreational activities are also provided at this site.

 

Tom Coburn Ball Fields

This facility contains two regulation softball fields, one baseball field, one Little League field, and one t-ball field. All fields are lit for night play. There is a concession building and public restrooms on this site. Parking is provided at this site also.

 

Tuscumbia Oakwood Cemetery

Oakwood Cemetery is located in the southwest portion of Tuscumbia. This cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Tuscumbia. Local walkers and joggers frequently use the site during the day.
